With its classic red brick, cream rendered facade and original Art Deco character elements, the home was extended to create more space, better functionality and added light throughout the home. With improved indoor-outdoor integration as well as a first floor loft extension to the rear, the residence enjoys a sense of continuity between the two styles and structures.
The sculpted shape of the loft nods to the pitched roofs of the surrounding homes and draws sunlight and ventilation deep into the home. Some of the original home's deco elements, such as its shard-like roof form and laser-cut porch screens and fences, have been recreated in the new addition, blurring lines between the old and the new. The result is a unified space honouring the bungalow's historical roots while providing a modern aesthetic.
Walking through the residence, the corridor features skylights overhead which bathe the home in natural light, casting beautiful light and shadows across the walls and floors. A courtyard and a flat-roofed glazed link form a bridge between the two halves, with a Japanese maple and a Zen garden creating a peaceful centre beside the stairs.
The open plan living and dining areas are adjacent to the kitchen, and flow naturally from the kitchen to the outdoors. Polished concrete floors work harmoniously alongside significant timber detailing, whilst commercial grade glass doors open up to the outdoor alfresco area. Architectural track lighting provides a contemporary look and a practical solution to lighting artwork.
The kitchen continues in the same design vein, with timber joinery, a custom stainless steel bench and charcoal cabinetry. An Armando Vicario tap, a double sink and Bosch appliances are integrated seamlessly. An integrated fridge and freezer add further convenience. Off the kitchen, there is a private study nook, wrapped in timber joinery, a minimalist bookcase, and abundant storage.
The rear alfresco creates a modern outdoor living area and sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle, with its concrete floor and wall and built-in barbeque, perfect for Summer dining. To the front of the residence and verges, extensive native landscaping and established greenery as well as laser-cut steel screens, provide a sense of calm and further privacy to the home.
In the main suite, the classical design features of the deco era have been preserved, including decorative cornices and timber-framed leadlight windows. The residence's details inspire an elegant look and feel, from the soft white walls, the jarrah floor boards and the high quality curtains, adding softness to the lofty space. The adjoining ensuite is sumptuous with a mix of grains and shades of grey. A perfectly placed skylight bathes the room in natural light, creating a calming atmosphere. It features extensive tiling, an inset square bathtub and separate shower and Omvivo tap ware.
The original house features two beautifully restored bedrooms and a third bedroom with its original brick fireplace, that equally doubles as a second living area should the need arise. Each is generous in size, with leadlight glass windows framed in timber. A ground floor bathroom, with separate powder room, services the secondary bedrooms as well as visitors.
Accessed via the timber-clad staircase in the open-plan living area is the light-filled fourth bedroom and a modern ensuite, which is perfect as a teen retreat or guest suite.
